Today, we are debuting the accompanying video for The Just Joans, new single ‘Limpet‘, which is out this week. With a jaunty rhythm of stompy percussion and plinky pianos, decorated in brass blasts, ‘Limpet’ is a delight, evoking the sound of Dexys Midnight Runners, 60s girl groups or an old Northern Soul record. It’s guided by the excellent vocals of Katie Pop her life-affirming melody, and the words embrace the wonderful messiness of life with a newborn from a woman’s perspective. The video blends archive kitchen-sink footage with images of vocalist Katie Pope singing over the top.
It’s taken from their forthcoming album Romantic Visions of Scotland (due out on 23 January 2026 via Fika). Pairing shambling indie pop with witty observations on romantic pratfalls and everyday disappointments, the Just Joans’ signature sound stems from siblings songwriter David Pope and singer Katie Pope. Brimming with pop tunes and wry observations about life, their irresistible kitchen-sink style has been elevated a notch by being recorded in an actual studio for the first time, with Paul Savage from The Delgados at Chem19.
As David explains: “I wrote “Limpet” shortly after my son was born. I wanted to write something that captured the wonderful messiness of life with a newborn, but also touched upon some of the stuff that you miss out on (mainly getting drunk and snogging strangers). It also seemed to make sense to try and write the song from a female perspective, for whom the all consuming nature of the experience is altogether more oppressive.”
