NEWS: Neon Ion shares blissful new single ‘Desert Bloom’

Neon Ion – the solo project of Norwegian vocalist Natalie Sandtorv, has released a blissful and soulful new single, ‘Desert Bloom’ . It’s a cinematic, anthem about survival, love, and the fragile balance between nature and human connection – painting in meditative soulful tones, framed in lush lyrics drawn textures, strings, swaying brass and a hypnotic clicking backseat. Neon Ion reflects on the rituals we all perform in search of love and recognition and it sounds glorious.

The song draws an intimate parallel between the earth and the heart: both can only thrive when they’re cared for.

“The ground will dry out if it doesn’t rain — and without the sun, nothing will grow.”

“At its core, ‘Desert Bloom’ is Neon Ion’s rain dance — a ritual of hope and renewal in a world that feels on the verge of collapse,” explains Natalie. “It’s Inspired by ancient rain ceremonies that humans have performed for centuries, the track transforms that collective longing for rain into a deeply personal prayer for emotional rebirth. A desert bloom is a rare natural miracle — when a barren landscape suddenly bursts into life after heavy rainfall. In the same way, the song evokes the beauty that can emerge from desolation, the love that grows again after heartbreak, and the fragile miracle of connection.”

Musically, ‘Desert Bloom’ fuses Neon Ion’s With a spiritual pulse inspired by Alice Coltrane’s Journey in Satchidananda, the song feels both transcendent and deeply grounded — as if it’s blooming directly from the desert’s dance floor. Neon Ion’s voice carries more force than ever, snapping with energy and emotion that pulls you into its rhythm.

She last released a full-length album, Mood Cosmic, in 2022. Since then, Sandtorv has battled health issues which led to her almost qutting music. But in 2024 she returned with a new trio called Orbits (with Jaga Jazzist’s Lars Horntveth and producer Erlend Mokkelbost) and earlier this year released the single “Softer”. This was followed in September by ‘Laugh Now, Cry Later.’

Neon Ion is the solo project of award-winning songwriter Natalie Sandtorv. Having made her name with debut record Freedom Nation in 2017, Sandtorv launched the Neon Ion project in 2020 with the Heart Echoes album, following it up in 2022 with second release Mood Cosmic.

Inspired by R&B, jazz, psych and rock, Sandtorv crosses genres with ease, her songs laced with heart-piercing lyrics, emotional weight and a voice to die for. With critically acclaimed albums under her belt, as well as international concerts at festivals and clubs in countries like France, Germany, Italy, and Romania, Neon Ion has already solidified her place as an artist to watch.

‘Desert Bloom’ is out now on Jazzland Recordings.
