Where We Sleep make a impression with their atmospheric new single ‘Headlong’, and the accompanying video, layers of slashing and simmering fuzz box riffing supplied by Mark Wallbridge (Vasko The Pig, Queen Horizon), allied to stabby synth lines, underpinned by looping beats and riven with the intensely melodramatic and powerhouse vocals of Beth Rettig. With a mix and mastering by Guy Fixen (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Lush). there are echoes of goth sounds of the 80s, the dark alt rock of Garbage and the cyclical shadowy gaze of Curve. But this is a chase where you are being tailed by a unknown pursuer, ‘the chaos is coming for you’ she sings ominously, as she careers down dark motorways.
Plunged deep in edgy and paranoid noir and swirling vocals it sounds like losing control. Watch the excellent video directed by Connor Hurley below. it echoes tumultuous times we live in, and how this impacts on an individual at a very human level. In the film Beth is tousled between passenger and driver’s seat, as she tries to take back control.
Rettig said: “The song is about escape from an absolutely chaotic black hole, about a realisation and awareness you need to extricate yourself from a situation, and take back control.”
Beth Rettig originally came to prominence as part of the band BLiNDNESS, where she performed with Debbie Smith (Curve/Echobelly), and were signed to signed to AC30 Records, performing with the likes of Lene Lovitch and Viv Albertine.
The single comes in advance of Where We Sleep’s second album, The Arsonist, set for release early next year, following the album The Scars They Leave and EP Experiments In The Dark, performing on line-ups including the likes of Desperate Journalist and Miki Berenyi.
Where We Sleep will be previewing tracks from the album in session live on the Loud Women, Resonance fm radio show, where she will be joined by Jo Gate Eastley and Ms Mohammed. She will also be performing the track ‘Write My Name,’ which she collaborated on with Ms Mohammed earlier this year to raise funds for MSF and Medical Aid for Palestinians.
