Noah and the Whale split 11 years ago, and life goes on. But, if like me, you pine for a reunion, you can find more than solace in London-based My Mercury. The band have released two EPs, and new single ‘Almost Ice’ is the latest in a string of releases leading up to their debut album, which is out in February. Both the single and the album are produced by Ed Nash from Bombay Bicycle Club.
My Mercury have been described as ‘Americana-kissed indie’, and previous single ‘Before’ is epic in the best Springsteen way. ‘Almost Ice’ takes the epicness up a notch. It starts with Tom Petty-like acoustic guitar, and frontman Michael Leger is soon joined on vocals by keyboardist Xanthe Wilkins. A wrestler/ninja “Huh!” signals a tempo change, and the mood becomes horses galloping towards a little house on the prairie. “Three DVDs / Alien v. Predator / Trophy on the mantel / Ping-pong downstairs” – it all sounds so wonderfully snug, like the cast of Friends all huddled on the Central Perk couch while snow glances off the window. It’s November and “A cold front’s a coming / Wind drivin’ rain,” but My Mercury don’t care – they’re in their element.
‘Almost Ice’ is out now on Bandcamp
