THE NONE have released MATTER AND CARE – the band’s debut two EPs – now pressed to vinyl for the first time. Previously only available on Bandcamp, the double EP is out now via Zennor Records in two hand-numbered variants, each with unique sleeve artwork, limited to 250 copies of each.
The industrial post-punk pioneers, THE NONE comprise of lifelong musicians; bassist Gordon Moakes (Bloc Party, Young Legionnaire), vocalist Kai Whyte (Blue Ruth, Youth Man), guitarist Jim Beck (Cassels) and drummer Chris Francombe (Frauds).Blisteringly abrasive yet achingly melodic, these first two releases draw from the edge of post-hardcore but push into darker, more introspective terrain – where dissonance becomes catharsis and restraint carries its own weight. Each song channels urgency, discomfort and beauty in equal measure.
Following their debut shows in February 2024, THE NONE have quickly built a reputation as a formidable live band. ‘MATTER AND CARE’ expertly bottles the lightning of their live shows. Working with producer Tom Hill, they set out to capture something raw, authentic, and honest
“The process was very quick and instinctive,” says guitarist Jim. “We wanted to play the songs as they were intended: loud, together, in the same room. In this band, the performance feels so closely tied to the composition. If we aren’t able to thrash around it doesn’t sound right.”
Raw honesty also runs through the lyrics. Across the EPs, singer Kai touches on a wide range of topics, including poverty, identity, and substance misuse. These moments of reflection are woven together with biting social commentary and dark humour. Speaking about the lyrics of standout track ‘Pigs Need Feeding’, they explain: “I was feeling some sort of shame about my vices, but it was juxtaposed with the knowledge that actual killers don’t feel any. I like a drink, but there are certain powerful people and organisations literally arming terror states that kill kids. Maybe I’m not the scumbag.”
Following a busy schedule of live shows with the likes of Mannequin Pussy, Les Savy Fav, Metz and The Jesus Lizard, and a rapidly sold out debut 7” single, ‘MATTER AND CARE’ draws a line under the first phase of the band. With new songs in the works and an album on the horizon, this release provides a tantalising taste of what’s to come.
The white sleeve edition will be released through Bandcamp only, while the black sleeve edition is only available through select indie retailers.
