Fresh from a run of dates in America and France, Dublin’s Scattered Ashes return with a double AA side single, ‘We Sell Silence’ / ‘Prisoners’. The tracks were recorded at Darklands Audio, Dublin produced by Daniel Doherty (Fontaines D.C., Meryl Streek) and mastered by Pete Maher (Echo & The Bunnymen, Liam Gallagher).
‘We Sell Silence’ is a rousing gesture of discontent at political impotence in the face of injustice. The track is a meditation on the corrosive nature of apathy and the unfolding global horrors in its wake. The abrasive goth duo create an intense feeling of claustrophobia and dread throughout by employing a corrosive synth pattern which dominates and underpins the song. The vocal of Rob Dalton is striking throughout, expressive and impassioned. The duo’s recent headfirst dive into electronica has evolved their sound and ‘We Sell Silence’ is the first result of this.
‘Prisoners’ deals with the toll of suicidal ideation and meditations on the idea of ‘fate’, an exploration of the intent to escape the mortal coil from which we are all bound to. Sonically it pays homage to the minimalist traditions of European New Wave: with angular guitars, 80’s drum machines and sombre vocals all being key standout features. A perfect companion to ‘We Sell Silence’, ‘Prisoners’ contrasts with it’s brooding intensity.
