Captain Starlet

When: 7th August 2025

Where: The Crescent, York, England

It is the Captain Starlet album release party. Their self-titled debut album came out a couple of weeks ago but tonight is the record’s official launch. And to mark the occasion, the celebrated York four-piece have invited along some friends. The young singer-songwriter and guitarist Ned Swarbrick gets the evening off to a great start. Since first seeing him in Leeds last October supporting Bernard Butler, his prodigious talent has developed even further. His songs are even stronger, his presence even greater. He is surely destined to go far.

Next up is another local musician James Shakeshaft, playing here in a trio with some nice echoes of early 70’s James Gang about them. He has an album launch party of his own, tomorrow night (Friday 8th August) at Mabgate Bleach in Leeds to officially announce the arrival of his second album, Ragged Ornaments.

And then the stage is set for Captain Starlet, tearing through those top tunes from the new record alongside some older chestnuts. They play with a joyful verve and no little intensity and alongside the two support acts this evening are clear and present evidence of a thriving local music scene.

Whenever, wherever, get out and support your grassroots music industry. There is no dynamic ticket pricing to trouble you on nights like this. You can get into your local venue for just a few quid, enjoy very reasonably priced drinks at the bar in a friendly, inclusive environment, and experience some absolutely great music into the bargain.
