Magnetic Skies were formed in 2019 by Simon Kent and Jo Womar through a shared love of 80s synth-driven post-punk. The duo is now a trio, with Lenin Alegria on drums. New single ‘Back to Life’ brings memories of Knight Rider back to life, and is the sort of shimmering, neon banger that 80s revivalists The Midnight would be proud to call their own.
The GIITTV review of Magnetic Skies’ single ‘You Shine On’ said that the track “has the vibes of Pet Shop Boys or even early Human League.” This is also true of ‘Back To Life’, though there’s an urgency to it that seems more akin to the 80s-inflected pop monsters made by The Weeknd.
Magnetic Skies’ debut album Empire Falling was released in 2023, and their track ‘A Place on Earth’ was released earlier this year. The band will be on tour in the UK in November.
Frontman Simon Kent says that ‘Back To Life’ “explores the tension between our deep, universal connection and the fragmentation we face in the modern world.” Thankfully, he and the rest of Magnetic Skies make late capitalist alienation easier to bear by seizing the means of music production. Depressed darkwavers of the world, unite!
