Welsh DIY weirdos Martyrs have returned with their new Syncline Folds EP, which is self-released today, Wednesday 23rd July and is the 4th in a seemingly endless series of algorithm-baiting single releases. It’s accompanied by a suite of new videos which will drop in the weeks following the release, beginning with title track ‘Syncline Folds’, that we are debuting below.
With elastic bass lines and an illuminating sound ‘Syncline Folds’ reminds one of the liminal melodies of Scritti Politti, decorated in shimmering guitars and keyboards. It is a song about one talentless man’s drive to make Great Art at the expense of their own sanity and everyone else’s happiness. “It’s only semi-autobiographical” says vocalist Michael. Cataclysmic choruses and unexpected key changes abound.
This offering includes a Bandcamp exclusive free download of the entire EP, while the first 3 tracks are available across all the usual, almost certainly evil, streaming platforms.
Martyrs are Jon and Michael, friends since childhood, growing up in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Their dedication to DIY music making can be heard on their bleak, brutal debut album Un Diavolo In Casa (2022) and on their bright and shiny follow-up Luminism (2024). They’re currently working through a series of ten genre-bending singles/EPs before, they say “we permanently shift into spoken word-infused rock opera.”
