After smashing her sets at The Great Escape and Dot to Dot Festivals, total tommy has today released her first new music since her critically acclaimed debut album, bruises released at the end of 2024 New single ‘Butterknife’ is a breakthrough moment for total tommy—gritty, guitar-driven alt-rock that dives into the tension between ego, purpose, and the toll of chasing an all-consuming dream. With hazy, celestial soundscapes buoyant percussion, dreamy soul-bearing lyrics and grungy anthemic hooks, total tommy is on the path to being the next indie queen.
On Butterknife, total tommy says
“Butterknife was a real breakthrough songwriting moment for me – it’s about grappling with feeling selfish for pursuing what can be a really ego-driven artform at times and the strain it puts on relationships. Being a musician sometimes feels like a bit of a ‘death wish’, because it’s literally an all in, live and breathe kinda thing. I love what I do so much, and it made me realise that the moment you start sharing music with the world and it’s no longer just for yourself, you have a role to play in not just adding to the noise but doing something constructive with it. So that’s really nice to keep in mind now!“
Critical support for the album was huge: NME, i-D, The Times, Clash, and more and on the radio there was sustained and continued support from triple j, Radio X, BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6Music. total tommy recently played a run of UK/EU dates that included a blistering shows at The Great Escape & Dot to Dot Festival. This Saturday, on the final date of the tour, total tommy will perform at Manchester’s iconic venue, YES.
