Lissie - In Sleep

Rating: 3/5

Rock Island songstress Elisabeth Maurus, with the voice of Stevie Nicks and the look of the girl next door! Now hidden away in a farmhouse somewhere in California, she touches the world at large with her songs and has been earmarked by some, including The Sunday Times, as a young lady to listen out for, following the Why You Runnin' EP from the tail end of last year.

The debut album is scheduled for a summer release and this is the first single to come from it. There's genuine warmth to this, with its easy country/aor crossover sound, emotive vocals and swaggering chorus line. It closes with some fine guitar strokes and comparisons can be drawn with Fleetwood Mac and Sheryl Crow. Taken in isolation, it's an interesting enough song to raise a degree of curiosity for the full set. We are advised by her PR folk that the album will be "packed full of surprises" and, whilst this is a nice enough single, there will need to be more divergence on the album in order to capture the imagination. Watch this space eh?
