The Donde Stars - America
Joe Coyle 16/09/2009
Welsh act The Donde Stars, tread the same well worn path as Radiohead, Coldplay, Feeder, Muse and too many other acts to mention. Do the Donde Stars have enough to set them apart from all the also rans? On this evidence... maybe.
Lacking in the immediacy that you would expect from a single, the lush layers of chiming guitars and atmospheric background compliment lead singer Luke Williams voice perfectly. But lead track 'America' doesn't seem to go anywhere and is at least 1 minute too long and lacks the urgency of its competition. Maybe there's an unfair expectation for this track to take its excellent beginnings and build on it to make a monumental conclusion but after a while the track repeats itself until you aren't really paying attention anymore, which is a shame cause there is so much to praise the band about. Musically spot on with Luke Williams soaring vocal ability, at the moment The Donde Stars are not as strong as the sum of their parts. When it finally clicks into place the Donde Stars will be something special. But in the meantime we will have to content ourselves with this perfectly pleasant track, which will in time hopefully become a small footnote in the Donde Stars ascendancy.
