Sweet Sweet Lies - Overrated Girlfriend/The Day I Change
Richard Wink 23/05/2010
Probably….. possibly….. maybe a song loses everything after the first listen. Some songs are built to last, others built to unravel, layer by layer until we get hooked in. This song is the cheeky joke your mate sent you in a text message. At first it raises a slight smile, perhaps even a little guffaw, but second time around you realize it's pretty drab.
'Overrated Girlfriend' is a quirky dose of Mariachi cabaret - different, I'll give the band that. It calls to mind a barbershop quartet who wants to be the Bad Seeds but lack enough vim and vigour to walk along the knife edge. In other words it is decidedly safe.
'The Day I Change' is a folk ballad. Ordinarily I'm partial to the morose kind, something that sounds a bit like Richard Hawley. For some reason this one doesn't click with me despite the delightfully understated harmonies.
